We have been alerted that a number of taxpayers are receiving emails from scammers representing themselves as IRS agents.
The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information – this includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages or social media. In late March, a number of phishing emails were being sent under the guise of a “document processing error”.
The latest series of such scams reads as follows: “Dear Member
Provided is a report on your 2013 tax return and due to no respond from you in the previous emails we sent to you, your 2013 Tax is held under review and investigation, please visit our weblink below to download and view your 2013 Tax Return Report
Kindly advise your decision regarding this Return for immediate processing.
Thank you. “
These emails contain a link which leads to a website and/or contact person that solicits their personal information or contains malicious software. In addition, they frequently include grammatical and/or spelling errors similar to those noted in the current case.
If you receive a communication such as this, do not reply, open any attachments, or click on any links. Forward the email as-is to phishing@nullirs.gov.
As a reminder, be sure to think twice when receiving emails or any communications soliciting your personal information.
