On the Desk
When asked if there are common themes as we approach the finish line of 2023, there is of course the logistical year-end planning, dotting of I’s and crossing of T’s. But conversations the past few weeks have a common thread of apprehension and unease. Unsurprisingly, the continuous stream of challenging world news can be really depressing, causing some to question their faith in people and worry about what lies ahead.
Some clients have concerns this will result in a tough economic stretch. Certainly, the markets have been volatile over the past year. However the reality is that Wall Street tends to run in historical patterns. It is not unusual for there to be a period of adjustment when the markets react to major disruptions. The impact on investments has always been short term in these cases, whereas we’ve crafted your plans to address longer term goals.
While we can’t fix the global situation here at AAF Wealth Management, we do understand how these developments weigh on you—as they weigh on me.
Combine uncertainties about the future with holiday season family get-togethers, and several clients are pondering how to approach ‘the family conversation.’ These conversations often involve tough topics like inheritance, financial responsibilities, and long-term planning. Adding to the stress can be complex family dynamics, like differences in goals, communication barriers, emotional attachments, fear of judgement, and subjective views on what’s fair.
My role is to help minimize the stress around these conversations. I facilitate discussions and provide objective guidance. We do this wherever works best: at our offices, via Zoom, even in our clients’ homes. The important part is to get everyone in a comfortable setting and on the same page.

I too am enjoying spending time with family and friends over the holidays. It’s so important to be intentional and present in the time we have together, and this is a great opportunity to embrace that.
Becky and I just had an excellent time at the AAFCPAs holiday party. It was a great way to connect with the team and to celebrate some good news at AAF Wealth Management: My colleague Jonathan Bloom was recently promoted to partner! Jon has worked hard for this, is deserving of this promotion, and helps every day to strengthen our wealth advisory team!
As always, please reach out with any questions. I look forward to talking with you in 2024!
