Big business in Boston tends to get all the headlines.

But it’s small business, at 98 percent of the businesses in Massachusetts, which form the backbone of the local economy. Last week was National Small Business Week, and the New England Society of Certified Public Accountants — an 11,000-member industry group serving thousands of small businesses — solicited advice from its members on what small business owners should know to succeed.

“NECPA members represent a wide variety of fields — everything from government, to education, to environmental accounting,” said Amy Pitter, president of the organization.

“The NECPA members in both public and private accounting have insight into practically every industry sector in the commonwealth, which make them a great resource for small business owners.”

The following tips, ranging from branding to tracking mileage, will help a business of any size succeed.
