AAFCPAs’ Tax Strategist Provides Pro Bono Legal Workshop for Lenny Zakim Fund Grantees
Posted on
AAFCPAs Tax Strategist Brittany Besler, CPA, JD, MBA volunteered her expertise and led a legal workshop: How to Maintain Nonprofit, Tax-Exempt, and Public Charity Status on May 14th in Boston, MA. This pro bono legal assistance workshop was developed at the request of the Lenny Zakim Fund for the benefit of their grantees: small, non-profit organizations with limited ability to raise other funds.
Brittany answered general questions and provided grantees with an overview of issues related to nonprofit formation. She covered the pros and cons of being a nonprofit versus a for-profit business, fiscal sponsorship, incorporating and structuring the nonprofit, highlights of the Form 1023 for federal tax-exemption, state and federal reporting and regulation, board duties, and federal tax rules applicable to 501(c)(3) organizations.
“We were so happy and fortunate to have Brittany present to our grantees,” said Jeannette Andre, Deputy Director for The Lenny Zakim Fund. “Her excitement and deep knowledge across a broad number of issues makes her such an amazing trainer.”
The nonprofit clients we serve have a tremendously positive impact on the employees and culture of AAFCPAs. Regardless of the mission, we are inspired daily by our awareness of all the great work that occurs by nonprofits in service to our community. We are happy to contribute by sharing our expertise in ways that ultimately increases the ability of nonprofits to serve the community.
